Law Enforcement Data Service

Home Office and National Police Chiefs' Council

The Law Enforcement Data Service (LEDS) is a modern cloud based, scalable data service which will enable the eventual retirement of the Police National Computer (PNC) and support the further modernisation and evolution of the UK’s Policing and Security Services. LEDS is based upon micro-services architecture enabling responsive development to maintain the pace of change required by Police Forces and is API driven to facilitate federation with other data services enabling appropriate data consumption at point of use.

The Programme approach delivers a range of “products,” each replacing an area of PNC functionality and focused on end-user needs. LEDS is a formal partnership between the Home Office and the National Police Chiefs’ Council, to ensure it meets operational police needs.

Each UK police force operates differently. Some have decided to introduce a mobile technology solution, but others have preferred not to. The LEDS programme has developed new technology solutions to enable forces which have not previously been able to access PNC data on the frontline. LEDS WebUI effectively ‘levels the playing field’ for policing in this regard by deploying industry standard mobile searching capability and is device agnostic.

The change from PNC to LEDS will transform an entire culture built upon 50 years of working practices. The new system allows policing to get what they need quickly and accurately: the design is intuitive, with warning signals and markers front-and-centre, is easier to read, navigate, and digest, and you get it right first time with your search.
